Meleda E. Padgett

Padgett, 99 passed away, April 24, 2007 at Tamarack Assisted Living Center, in Altus, Oklahoma.  She was born, December 7, 1907, to Paul Sr. and Anna Hoehne on a homestead six miles north of Altus.  She was their eighth child and the first of their eleven children to be born in Oklahoma.

She met Leonard Abner Padgett from Minneola, Texas, while he was in Altus doing seasonal work.  They married April 23, 1927.  They moved to Texas, but returned to farm part of her parents’ farm in 1937.  They left the farm in 1953, moving to Blair and started a rental business.  They purchased and moved Army barracks from Childress, Texas, remodeling them for apartments and later began to purchase and remodel houses also.  They were married sixty seven years before his death on March 17, 1995.

Meleda is survived by two daughters, Helen Paris and her husband, Chuck of Altus, OK, Evelyn Elkins, and her husband Bill, of Midwest City, OK, and two sons, Wilburn Padgett, of Petaluma, CA, and Melvin Padgett and companion, Nelda Crump, of Blair, OK, one brother, Martin Hoehne, 91, of Arlington, TX.     Meleda loved to work outside whether it was painting a rental, yard work or gardening.  She especially liked to go to the Altus swimming pool at least once a week.  She was at the pool on her ninety ninth birthday, December 7th, and related it was one of her best birthdays with all the cards, calls, and visitors she had that week.  Her last time there was January third, shortly before going to the hospital and discovering she had inoperable cancer.

She cooked Christmas dinner with turkey and all the trimmings for approximately twenty family members and made peanut brittle to give away just because she felt good and wanted to do it herself.  She was a faithful member of the Blair First Baptist Church.  She was a model and strength to everyone even though she never thought of herself as being special.

Troy grew up in the very intimate town of Blair.  He greatly enjoyed his sports, loved playing baseball and was known to be one of fastest runners around.  When not in school, playing sports, or working, he participated in the current favorite past-time was cruising the Altus square with his friends, James Ladd and Bill Glazner just to name a couple. Troy graduated from Blair High School in 1948. He married Margie Kirby in January of 1948 in Altus, Ok. and to this union three children were born.

In his early 30’s he became a black belt in Judo performing exhibitions all over California perfecting his skill until he broke his clavicle and retired.  Also, in his free time, aside from family, his greatest joy was horseback riding and cattle round-ups.  He continued to be an avid sports fan and knew the current scores of ALL the games and team rankings.  It was not uncommon for him to watch the TV and listen to another game on the radio. He was a member of the local Sheriff’s Posse and enjoyed their group activities.

The answer is found in 2 Corinthian 4:16:  That is why we never give up though our bodies are dying; our spirits are being renewed every day.

Ruby had many ANGELS that came into her life. Jackson County Home Health and most recently Hospice were her angels. She had a truly special caregiver, Eudora, who was a true Godsend.  Ruby loved her as a daughter and the feeling was reciprocated.
