Randy Woolbright

Coach Randy Woolbright passed from this life on Saturday, November 3, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at the Altus High School Gym with Tom Bailey and Matt Springfield officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Randy was born to Dub and Gerri Woolbright on April 29, 1950, in Howe, Oklahoma at his grandparents “rock house.” He had many fond memories of the time he spent with his grandparents and cousins in the hills of southeastern Oklahoma. The Woolbright family included Randy, his sister Candy and brother Bink. They were “coaches” kids and spent most of their school days in southwestern OK. Randy graduated from Blair High School in 1968 where he was an outstanding baseball and basketball player. When not playing sports, Randy could usually be found quail hunting or crappie fishing. After high school he attended York College in Nebraska, then Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Randy answered a call to serve his country in1970 by joining the US Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam during the war. At the end of his service, he returned to Lawton, OK and completed his degree in education.

In 1976 Randy took his first coaching job in Arnett OK, where he met and later married the love of his life Dianna Stout. In July of 1979 they began their life together while teaching and coaching at Carnegie High School. 1980 through ‘81 proved to be a great time for the Woolbrights. In December of ‘80 they were blessed with a beautiful little girl named Amanda Beth. Coach Woolbright and his Carnegie Lady Wildcats made it to the state finals the following spring. When not coaching, Randy was spending his time noodling on the Washita River. A son, Ryan William, joined their loving family in 1983.

In 1984 more changes came their way as the young family moved to Waurika to pursue a coaching job. After several years of hard work, Coach Woolbright and the Lady Eagles of 1991 were able to make a state tournament appearance. Their second son, Reece Weston, was born into their family that fall. It was some of their happiest times, fishing at Waurika Lake, hunting at Pat’s and playing ball. They spent thirteen years in the Waurika community.

In 1998 an opportunity to coach at Altus High presented itself. The Woolbrights were eager to try life in the “city.” Coaching in Altus was challenging for a veteran coach, but 2001 brought success for him and the team when they earned a trip to the State Tournament.

Coach Randy Woolbright retired from coaching in 2005. After hanging up his whistle, Randy continued to pursue his lifelong hobbies of hunting, fishing, and storytelling with his many friends and family. August 2005 opened a new chapter in Randy’s life. He became a grandfather to Brayden Davis, whom he fondly called “Buffalo.”

The great passions of Randy’s life were his family, coaching, and fishing. Coach Woolbright is remembered as an outstanding husband, father, teacher, and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Annette Wright

Annette Wright, 96, of Altus, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at Plantation Village Nursing Home.  Services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 27 at Kincannon Funeral Home with Tom Bailey officiating, burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery.

Annette Wright was born on March 27, 1911, in Axtell, Texas, to John Wesley and Laura Isabell (Smith) Overstreet.  She attended Port Consolidated School in Washita County, Oklahoma.  She married William Perry (Willie) Wright on January 11, 1930, in Hobart, Oklahoma.  To this union were born three sons.  Annette was employed with Hemphill Wells Department store in Lubbock from 1960-1976 as a sales representative in the children’s department.  She was also an excellent seamstress and was known for her beautiful work making drapes, pillows, tablecloths, runners, and doll clothes.  If she had fabric and her sewing machine, she was happy!  As a child she learned to sew, sitting at her mother’s feet while she ran the old treadle sewing machine.  When she was older she would do the foot peddle on the machine for her mother.  At 8 years of age, she cut the fabric and sewed two dresses by herself.  One dress was for her best friend and the other was for her.  The fabric was white with red dots, so the girls called them their “apple” dresses.  Annette also loved to entertain family and friends.  Fried chicken was one of her specialties.  When her boys were coming to visit, she would fry up a couple of chickens with plenty of potatoes and gravy.  At 80 years of age, she took up oil painting.  She made sure that each of her boys had a special picture for his home. She always worked hard, but she never said she was tired!  To help with the family income, she had pulled cotton.  One time she recalled pulling 600 lbs. of cotton in a day!  After heart by-pass surgery at the age of 85, she finally understood why some people said they got tired.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, her father, her mother, four brothers, and three sisters. Mrs. Wright is survived by her sons, Bill J. Wright, of Oklahoma City, OK, Cecil H. Wright and wife Janet, of Altus, OK, and Larry Don Wright of Santa Rosa, CA; two sisters, Francis Overstreet Marshall of Lubbock, TX, and Vercie Overstreet Webb and husband J.D., of Esterville, IA; one brother, Vernon Overstreet of Ft.
