Cremation
What is cremation?
Cremation is performed by placing the human remains in a wood casket or combustible box and then into a cremation chamber where they are subjected to intense heat and flame. With the help of a suitable fuel, incineration is accomplished and all substances except calcium compounds and metal are consumed. This process on average takes approximately 2-4 hours with a cooling period following. When the cremated remains are removed from the cremation chamber, they are separated from all non-combustible materials such as hinges, nails, latches, and other materials from the bridgework of the casket and then mechanically processed.
Can implanted medical devices prevent me from choosing cremation?
Pacemakers and measured dose dispensing devices have an explosive risk, and are removed prior to cremation.
Do I have to be embalmed if I choose cremation?
Embalming is necessary only if the family chooses pubic visitation or a funeral service with the body present. However, Oklahoma statues require embalming, direct burial, or refrigeration within 24 hours of death.
I’m ok with cremation, but I want a funeral service with public visitation. Can I do this?
Yes, you can choose a traditional service with a hardwood casket (specifically designed for cremations) or a hardwood rental casket (combustible insert is removed after service). Instead of transporting to the cemetery, following services the human remains are transported to the crematorium.
If I choose not to have a funeral with the body present, can I still have a memorial service so that my family and friends can gather to remember?
A wide variety of ceremonies are possible with cremation. You can choose a private or public visitation before the cremation is done. (Embalming may be necessary because of State Statutes). A memorial service can be held in your church or the funeral home chapel, with or without the cremated remains. There is no time limit and the service may be delayed to allow family and friends time to travel. Other arrangements can be made for private or public graveside services or a scattering ceremony which compliments personalization.
