Lois Irene Huey

July 4, 1939 — November 26, 2017

Lois Irene Huey, 78, Altus, peacefully passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Altus, Oklahoma with Dr. Jeff Moore and Rev. Doug Altom officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Lois Irene Burden was born to Van and Edith (Ward) Burden July 4, 1939, in Lequire, Haskell County, Oklahoma. At a young age, her Father moved the family to southwest Oklahoma to be near relatives and family. She grew up and attended school in the Foss and Stafford communities, graduating from Stafford High School with a Senior Class of three boys and two girls. Following graduation, Lois soon met the love of her life and married Edward Lee Huey on July 31, 1959, in Sayre, Oklahoma. They lived in the Bessie and Cooperton Valley communities before settling in the Roosevelt community for twelve years, then moving to Altus in 1974. At Roosevelt, Lois and Ed were the owner operator of H&H Grocery, along with Ruth and Odie Hopkins. She was also a teacher’s aide for Roosevelt Public Schools. Lois and Ed were one of the founding couples of the Roosevelt/Cooperton Valley Square Dance Club, called “Country Squares.” At Altus, she served as secretary at Northeast Junior High from 1974 to 1990, when she retired. Lois enjoyed working with Ed in their yard at 1900 Robin; attending church, and participating in travel tours, which included many trips throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas to Europe and Israel. Thanksgiving and Christmas always involved her cornbread dressing, deviled eggs, and “pink salad.” Birthday celebrations required Gram’s fried chicken and the birthday boy or girl’s choice of mashed potatoes with gravy or potato salad (or both).

Lois is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Lee Huey; brothers, Archie and Frank; and sister, Maxine. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Debbie Nikkel and husband, Nick, of Corn, Oklahoma, Pete Huey of Amelia Island Florida, Clark Huey and wife, Gina, of Altus, Oklahoma, and Lois Ann Ray and husband, Forrest, of Altus, Oklahoma. Grandchildren are Michael Nikkel, Micah Huey, Jared Huey, Taylor Huey, Lexie Ray, and McKenna Ray; great grandchildren, Madison Nikkel, Mariah Ray, and Maleiah Ray. She also leaves behind a sister, Ruby Mowry, of Mustang, Oklahoma, sister and brother, Mary Sue Richardson and Jimmy Burden, both of Butler, Oklahoma, and brother, Gene Burden, of Elk City, OK. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends; and very special friends and caretakers, Angel Lewis, Donna Shepherd, Theresa McKnight and Clara Herd. The family owes a debt of gratitude they can never repay for the love, care and companionship these four ladies gave Lois the last year of her life.

The Huey family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 28 at the Kincannon Gathering Room.
