Ethel Cofield

October 3, 1926 — September 23, 2016

Ethel Cofield, 89, Altus, passed away September 23, 2016 after a tiring battle with cancer at her home. Ethel passed away just eleven days short of her ninetieth birthday. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the 11th Street Church of Christ, Sentinel, Oklahoma with Mark Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Sentinel Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home.

Ethel Lee Hopkins was born on October 3, 1926, to Bun Oliver and Dessie Lee (McKillip) Hopkins in a farm home at Port, Oklahoma, where the doctor had to ride a horse across the Big Elk Creek to get to the house. She became the ninth child born into the family. She attended the Port School and later attended classes at Western Oklahoma State College. On October 30, 1960, Ethel and John M. Cofield were united in marriage after being introduced by a local chiropractor. They owned and operated the Oliver Tractor Dealership on the west end of Altus. They were able to get the Case Tractor Dealership and moved their store three miles east of Altus where they worked hand in hand until their retirement. Retirement was short lived for them both as they became full time farmers. Ethel would plow and combine when her help was needed. She loved to be involved in the community. They were among some of the first businesses to participate in Farm City Week in Altus. She even flew in the plane one year. Ethel was active in Jackson County Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee and loved to plan meetings and attend other county meetings. Ethel obeyed the gospel over seventy five years ago. She was a member of the Third Street Church of Christ from the age of fourteen. She cared for her church family and believed that the Bible was our step to step guide on how to live your life and in the end reach your eternal life in Heaven.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and love of her life, John M. Cofield; one grandson, Kent L. Cofield; four brothers, Marlin, Earnest, Dean and Louis Hopkins; and three sisters, Eula Mae Janes, Pauline King and Viva Janes.

Ethel is survived by one son, Brent Cofield and wife, Eileen; grandsons, Chad Cofield and John Robert Cofield and wife, Kendra; great-grandchildren, Leighton, Bryson and Gracelynn; two sisters, Maurine Freeman and Dorothy Janes; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Ethel was very lucky to have a special caregiver, Eileen Cofield, her daughter-in-law. Eileen gave seven years of her life which allowed Ethel to stay in her own home.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:00 PM Friday, September 30, 2016 at the funeral home.
