Joyce Ann Smith, 83, former Altus resident, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 in Edmond, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 3, 2021 at the Kincannon Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Altus City Cemetery under the care of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Joyce Ann Thompson was born on September 18, 1937 in Camas, Washington to Shelby and Juanita (Reynolds) Thompson. She attended Mabton High School in Washington, graduating in 1956. She married Willie (Bill) Clyde Smith on November 10, 1956 in Spokane, Washington. Joyce worked in Human Resources for many years at both the Jackson County Memorial Hospital and later at Altus Athletics. She was a published author, writing fiction for young adults. She thoroughly enjoyed reading, especially western books where the main characters were usually female. Joyce volunteered at several local organizations, including her church, Highland Heights Methodist Church, the Altus Public Library and the Museum of the Western Prairie.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Deborah Abernethy; a son, Jeff Smith; a grandson, Lyle Smith; her parents; a brother, Bob Thompson; and a daughter in law, June Smith.

Joyce is survived by a son, Gary Smith, a daughter, Susan Barnes, 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
