Rex D. Bailey, 82, of Altus, long time Altus banker and financial advisor, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel. The family will hold a private burial. Rex was born July 9, 1932 in Weatherford, Oklahoma as the youngest of six children to Joseph and Pearl (Grounds) Bailey. Rex was the last remaining member of the family as he was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Rex grew up in Clinton, Oklahoma and graduated from Clinton High School in 1950. Rex then married June Lovell on April 14, 1952. They were married for 58 years and had two children, Terry and Debra. Rex and June moved to San Antonio, Texas as Rex was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston serving as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Military police and played football and baseball for the Ft. Sam Houston base team. After leaving the military, Rex and June moved to Elk City, Oklahoma to begin a career with White’s Auto Store leading to a transfer to Altus as manager. After several years, Rex left Whites Auto to become a loan officer at First State Bank in Altus. Rex spent 28 years with First State retiring in 1989 as President, a position he served in for 5 years. Rex then began a 15 year career with MetLife selling financial products retiring in 2005. Rex was very active in the community and church over the years serving on the boards of the Red Cross, Jackson County Memorial Hospital, Lions Club, Grace United Methodist Church and First State Bank. Rex also served as President of the Altus Chamber of Commerce and active with the civil defense for weather for Southwest Oklahoma. Rex and June were also part of a small group of families that helped start Grace United Methodist Church in 1961. Rex was preceded in death by his wife June, in 2010. Rex and June have one son, Terry Bailey and wife Renee of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Debra Vassella of Altus; four grandchildren, Michael Vassella of Dallas, Texas, Coby Bailey of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Taylor and Colton Bailey of San Antonio; and a sister-in-law, Helen Bailey of Lawton, Oklahoma. The Bailey family will greet friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday evening at Kincannon Funeral Home. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, please make any gift in Rex’s honor to JCMH Hospice at PO Box 1139, Altus, Oklahoma 73521.
