Obituary

Alice Adelia Hughes was born on February 11, 1922, in Olustee, Oklahoma to Carl and Ola Mae (Watson) Willeford. She was raised and lived in the Harmony/Olustee communities and attended Harmony School.

Adelia married Melton Hershel Hughes on April 15,1939, in Altus, Oklahoma. They shared 57 beautiful years before he preceded her in death on February 11, 1997.

Adelia is credited for being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a very generous person, a good cook (creating many of her own recipes), and a great seamstress. She enjoyed playing dominoes and always had a puzzle in process.

She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ all her life and loved to sing church hymns. Being an avid reader, Adelia read the complete Bible each year. One of her favorite Bible verses was Psalm 19:14. Adelia passed away peacefully after 104 years on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Adelia was preceded in death by her husband, Melton Hershel Hughes; her parents; stepmother, Essie Willeford; three sisters: Velma Smith and husband, Ernest Smith, Lorene Simmons and husband, G.T. Simmons, and Martha Marie Willeford; two brothers: Earnest Lee (Eddie) Willeford and wife, Mary, and Carl Edward (Cotton) Willeford and wife, Sue; two sons-in-law: Jerry Marquart and Gary Carter; and one daughter-in-law, Minerva Hughes.

Survivors include two daughters: Karla Marquart of Duke, Nancy Carter of Lubbock, Texas; son, Lannie Hughes of Duke; three grandchildren: Mitzi Marquart of Azle, Texas, Kacy Wade Marquart of Duke, and Mark Carter and wife, Sharon of Lubbock, Texas; two great grandchildren: Amanda Carter and Emma Carter of Lubbock, Texas; and half-brother: C.E.
