Douglas Michael Thomas, 78, of Altus, OK passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025, holding the hand of his loving wife. A Celebration of Life will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 24th, in the Kincannon Memorial Chapel, 3020 North Main, Altus, OK and will be lived streamed from his personal obituary page at www.kincannonfuneralhome.com. Burial will immediately follow at the Altus City Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by the Blue Knights Honor Guard of Altus Air Force Base.
Douglas was born on March 13, 1947, in Cherokee, OK to Elgin and Ima Jean Thomas. A proud member of the Cleveland High School Class of 1965, he was known for his love of football and steady work ethic. Soon after graduation, he headed into the pipeline fields before being drafted into the U.S. Air Force. He bravely served two tours in Vietnam, beginning a 24-year military career that shaped both his character and his deep love for the Altus community, where he spent most of his service and later chose to build his life.
A lifelong learner and craftsman at heart, Douglas earned two associate degrees from Western Oklahoma State College and later taught woodworking there, a class his students remembered fondly for both his skills and his patience. After retiring from the military, he continued his service to others in Local Manufacturing at Altus Air Force Base, retiring again after another 24 years of dedicated work.
Douglas had a gift for turning wood and small moments into something meaningful. Whether he was building flag display cases for his fellow civil servants or crafting teddy bear rockers to welcome new babies, he poured love and precision into everything he made. He loved football, the discovery of a good yard sale, and the joy of surprising friends with the treasures he found.
His humor, gentle charm, and generous heart left an imprint on everyone blessed to share time with him. He was truly loved, and his kind, beautiful spirit will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elgin and Ima Jean Thomas; his niece, Tara; his sister, Dian; and his wife, Huguette.
He is survived by his wife of two years, Dawn Thomas; his niece, Tracy and her husband, Justin Stephenson of Kingfisher, OK; great nieces and nephews, Cailie and Talie Owen, Cade, Ally, Carter, and Cru Stephenson. Douglas is also survived by numerous cousins.
The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to the Cancer Centers of SW Oklahoma * 1200 E. Broadway Street * Altus, OK 73521 in Douglas's name in lieu of flowers.
