Freddy Mack Downs

Freddy Mack Downs, a lifelong resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 66. Freddy was a simple, quiet, and uncomplicated man who found contentment in the ordinary things of life. He was a familiar presence in the Altus community and will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.

Freddy Mack Downs was born to James Laverne “Jimmy” and Carol Jean (Stewart) Downs in Altus, Oklahoma, on March 5, 1960. One of five siblings, Freddy always had built-in best friends by his side. He attended Altus Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1978. Following high school, Freddy began a career in the electrical trade, working with IBEW Local 1141 and becoming a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, where he remained throughout his career.

A stock car racing fan at heart, Freddy could often be found at Altus Speedway and Sooner International throughout his racing career. His skill behind the wheel earned him two championships at Altus Speedway. His quiet, uncomplicated approach to life earned him a devoted following, affectionately known as the “Freddy Downs Fan Club”—complete with T-shirts and plenty of enthusiasm.

Freddy loved sharing his passion for racing with others, especially the younger generation. He was known for sharing his winning trophies with children in the stands, inspiring a love for the sport that would carry on long after the race was over. Around the track, Freddy was known for always passing on the outside, but he never passed up an opportunity to give it his all. That same “all-in” approach was evident in the way he lived his life.

Freddy was never one to seek the spotlight. He was simple and quiet, content with the life he lived and the people with whom he shared it. His unassuming nature, sense of responsibility, love of racing and solitary hobbies such as golfing and fishing, and genuine kindness made him someone people were proud to call a friend.

Freddy was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Carol Jean Downs; and his brother, Terry Downs.

His memory will be cherished by his siblings, Suzie Braddock, Greg Downs and wife, Jinebel, and Brad Downs; sister-in-law, Sandra Downs; nieces and nephews, Ashleigh Adkins and husband, Christian, Tera Kay Downs, Beth Braddock and spouse, Kassidy, and Andrew Downs; his stock car racing family; and many friends who were fortunate to know him.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 31, 2026, in the Kincannon Memorial Chapel, with Rev. David Braddock officiating. Online memorial tributes and expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at www.kincannonfuneralhome.com.
