George Michael Hubanks was born on September 17, 1947, in Hollis, Oklahoma, to James Henry and Della Margarite (Hollomon) Hubanks. One of five children, George was deeply rooted in Harmon County and never strayed far from the place he proudly called home.
After graduating from Hollis High School, George married the love of his life, Velma “Joyce” Wood, on November 2, 1964, in Wellington, Texas. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three wonderful children: Michael, Patrick, and Delene.
A tireless worker and community fixture, George owned and operated George’s in Hollis, serving up some of the best fried chicken around alongside Joyce. He had a strong work ethic, but he was just as committed to enjoying life—especially if it involved fishing, hunting, or good-natured rough housing on the basketball court in a backyard game with his children.
George had a passion for motorcycles and classic cars, especially his black 1955 Chevy. He was always in attendance whenever he got word of a car show. He was known for his quick wit, constant humor, and signature “dad jokes.” George was always chasing his next adrenaline rush—like the time he took to the skies with a friend, and the moment his feet touched the ground, he was already itching to go back up.
If you knew George, you likely experienced his unmatched generosity. He could do just about anything he set his mind to, and his deep love for family and community was always evident. His warmth and laughter left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. George passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, with 77 years full of laughter and love.
Those who preceded George include his parents; son, Michael Hubanks; brothers, Charles Terry Hubanks, and wife Barbara, and James Barry Hubanks; sister, Margaret McAlpine, and baby sister JoAnne Hubanks; and nephews, Scott McAlpine, Larry McAlpine, Butch McAlpine, and Kevin Nation.
