Obituary

Gregory Dean Johnson was born on January 18, 1951, in Dodge City, Kansas to John Johnson and Elnor (Cross) Johnson. He was raised in Dodge City and graduated with the Class of 1969. Just weeks before graduation, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Sue Troxel, and together they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. Their union was blessed with their beloved daughter, Melissa.

Gregory proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years as a communications specialist. During his military career, he and his family had the opportunity to live in many different places before eventually finding a place to call home. When Carolyn was offered a civil service position at Altus Air Force Base, the couple moved to Vernon, Texas, intending to stay for only a year. More than 20 years later, they were still there, having built a life and many cherished friendships along the way. Gregory later accepted a position working on base as well, and in 2023, he and Carolyn officially made their home in Altus to be closer to family.

Gregory loved grilling, cooking for his family, and spending time outdoors. Above all else, his faith in the Lord and his love for his family were at the center of his life. He was a licensed minister with The Church of God, where he faithfully preached God’s Word, taught classes, and shared his love of scripture with others. Gregory especially treasured time spent with his great-grandchildren, making memories with them that his family will hold close for years to come.

Gregory was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ronald Gene Johnson; and his sister, Johnnie Ebaugh.

Those left to cherish and honor his memory include his beloved wife, Carolyn Johnson; his daughter, Melissa Allen and her husband, Rodney; his sister, Starla Davidson and her husband, Kevin; his granddaughter, Kayla Gollihare and her husband, Dylan; his great-grandsons, Brennox Timothy Gollihare and Beckett Dean Gollihare; as well as many dear friends and extended family members who will miss him deeply.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Kincannon Funeral Home in Altus. Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 12th, at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Pastor Fred Villa officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Altus City Cemetery with honors rendered by the United States Air Force.
