James M Fisher

James “Fish” Fisher, 59, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 13, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with military service-related illness.

Born on August 29, 1967, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Clouis and Marilynn Fisher, James grew up in Rockport, Texas, where he would meet the love of his life, Melanie. High school sweethearts and best friends through their church youth group, James and Melanie began a love story that would span four decades. They married on January 31, 1986, building a life rooted in extraordinary love, deep friendship, unwavering faith, and devotion to their family.

In 1987, James answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. He went on to become a highly decorated Technical Sergeant and boom operator, specializing in aerial refueling. Throughout his distinguished military career, he served through numerous deployments, wartime operations, and conflicts between 1988 and 2007. Affectionately known as “Fish,” he was a respected leader, mentor, and airman whose strength, dedication, and compassion left a lasting impression on those who served alongside him. His military service was a tremendous source of pride, not simply because of what he accomplished, but because of the honor he found in serving something greater than himself.

Yet, for all his accomplishments in uniform, James’s greatest pride and joy was always his family.

He was a devoted husband, a fiercely protective and loving father, and a fun-loving grandfather. He led with strength, taught with patience, and loved with his whole heart. He could be stubborn, he could make you laugh, and his unmistakable smile and laughter could fill a room. He was a man who believed in protecting those he loved, sharing what he knew, and standing firmly in what he believed.

Above all, James was a man of faith. Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior, and that faith was a foundation of his life. He shared the love of Christ with his family, leaving behind a spiritual legacy as meaningful as any honor he earned in service to his country.

Although his later years were marked by a long battle with illnesses related to his military service, those struggles never defined the entirety of the man he was. He will be remembered for his strength and compassion, his laughter and love, his leadership and faith, and the countless ways he shaped the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

James is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Melanie Fisher; his children, Ashley Story and her husband, Christopher, Katharine Long and her husband, James, and Michael Fisher; and his cherished grandchildren, Jake Brakebill, Kye Story, Raife Story, and Shayne Story. He is also survived by his mother, Marilynn Fisher; and his sister, Laura Gordon; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clouis Fisher; his sister, Nancy Fisher; his nieces, Stephanie English and Sara English; his brothers-in-law, Larry English and Alan English; and his parents-in-law, Peter English and Barbara English.

James lived a life of service—to his country, to his family, and above all, to the Lord. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so fiercely, the lives he helped shape, and the faith he passed down to those who will carry his memory forward.

To his fellow airmen, he was Fish. To his family, he was so much more. And to his Savior, he was His own.
