John Mark Hatton, affectionately known as Mark, was born to Carl Newton and Iva Ola (Drury) Hatton on January 6, 1954, in Altus, Oklahoma. He spent his entire life in the Altus community, where he attended local schools and graduated from Altus High School with the Class of 1972.

Mark had a deep passion for music and automobiles. A skilled guitar player, he played with various bands throughout his life and enjoyed sharing his love of music with others. The Beatles and Queen were among his favorite bands, along with many others. Mark could talk music with just about anyone and was always happy to share his knowledge and show off his impressive guitar collection.

He also had a special eye for classic cars. Mark particularly enjoyed watching and attending the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auctions, where he could spend hours admiring the beautiful and unique automobiles. As the owner of Hatton Texaco, Mark worked as a mechanic in the auto service department, putting his knowledge, skill, and love of automobiles to work each day. Hatton Texaco was an important part of Mark’s life and became a familiar and valued part of the Altus community.

Mark had a special way of connecting with people and was known for giving just about everyone a nickname. His friendly personality, quick wit, and sense of humor helped him form many lasting friendships. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time on the golf course and sharing his love of music and classic cars with those around him.

John Mark Hatton passed from this life on August 11, 2026, at the age of 72. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Iva; and his sister, Barbara Cimino.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his son, Toby Whiteside and his partner, Amber; his brother, Carl Ivan Hatton and his friend, Shirley; his close friends, “Daddy Bob” Avila, “Baby Bob” Bobby Avila, Phil Philips, John McAskill, Tom Peters, Terri and Rodney Brown, Bob Austin, “Joey Jim” Click, and John and Rachel Clason; his special friends, George and Margie Stordahl; along with many other dear friends and family who will forever cherish the memories they shared with Mark.

Mark was simply a good guy—a genuine friend who was always himself and never met a stranger. He will be remembered for his easy friendship, quick wit, love of music and classic cars, and the many nicknames he gave along the way. For those fortunate enough to call Mark a friend, his absence will be deeply felt. His was a life well lived, filled with music, laughter, friendship, and the things he loved. He will be missed by many and remembered fondly for years to come.
