Joseph Neal Mitchell,

Joseph Neal Mitchell, Jr., 68, Altus, passed away, Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Father Sundar and Deacon Eulis Mobley officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in Lawton, Oklahoma with Father Joseph Ross officiating. Services are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. Joseph Neal Mitchell, Jr. was born December 30, 1941 to Dr. Joseph N. and Mollie A. (Alverson) Mitchell in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Lawton in 1959. He later graduated in 1963 with a BSBA from Xavier University, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He married Janet M. Gilroy-Dickerson on March 28, 1987 in Vernon, Texas. He served his country in the United States Air Force as a navigator on the KC–135, retiring after 25 years with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Colonel Mitchell received numerous awards including the Air Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a Boy Scout Counselor for troop 212, Navajo School Basal Ball Coach, Coordinator for Harvest for the Hungry. He enjoyed flag football, softball, the stock market, playing pitch and eating pasta. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Janet, of the home; a daughter, Heidi Schneir of New York City, NY; a son, Joseph N. “Trey” Mitchell, III of Altus, OK; a stepdaughter, Jody Tudor and her husband, Jon, of Austin, Texas; a stepson, Tommy Dickerson and his wife, Michelle, of Austin, Texas; a sister, Domenica Ann (Mitchell) Stafford of Lawton, OK; a brother, Michael Franklin Mitchell of Houston, TX; and four grandchildren, BriAnna and Jenna Tudor, and Andrew and Jeremy Pierce.
