Mary M. Greene

May 10, 1959 — October 7, 2025

Altus

Mary M. (Lucero) Greene was born on May 10, 1959, on the Zia Pueblo in New Mexico, to Luterio and Pablita (Galvan) Lucero where she embraced her Native culture and was deeply influenced by its strong sense of community. To her family, she was affectionately known as “Shy-ya”, meaning Indian Doll—a name that reflected her gentle spirit and vibrant beauty.

Mary’s love for dance began early as a Zia Pueblo dancer – the traditional dresses as vibrant and expressive as her own personality. That love for movement and joy followed her throughout life—Mary could always be found dancing like nobody was watching.

In 2001, Mary relocated to Oklahoma, where she quickly built a new community and made her home in Altus. It was there she met her life partner of more than 20 years, William Copeland. A collector of Native American dolls and meaningful relics, Mary was known for her cheerful spirit and infectious laughter. She was often described as “the life of the party,” but also as someone strong, grounded, and deeply resilient.

Her compassion and warmth were evident throughout her 20+ years with Goodwill Industries, where she delighted in visiting with regular customers, especially the elderly—and sharing stories about her family. Her pride in her children and grandchildren was evident in every conversation.

Mary had a special gift for nurturing plants and even planted a small tree in her yard. She also enjoyed fine wine and the simple pleasures it brought to life’s special moments.

Mary passed from this life on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. She will be dearly missed by her children, Sarah, Alex, Isaiah (Jackie), and Isaac (Rosetta); 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her partner, William Copeland; her special cousin-sister, Lorraine Dewahe; and many other family members and friends whom she deeply loved.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ivy; her parents, Luterio and Pablita; and her siblings, Ramona, Luke, and Arnold.

Mary’s joyful heart, radiant smile, and zest for life will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
