May Dell (Bitz) Allen Gipson peacefully passed away at her home in Altus on Wednesday morning, June 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. May loved the Lord with all her heart and lived a life devoted to serving others, always placing their needs before her own.
Born on May 29, 1943, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to John Daniel and Lena Leota (Williams) Bitz, May was the only daughter in a trio of siblings. Although her brothers often tested her patience with their antics, she loved them fiercely, especially her baby brother, Carl. In 1951, when May was eight years old, the family moved to Warren, Oklahoma, settling in the area known as Ignorant Bend. She graduated from Warren School in 1961.
Throughout her childhood, May developed a remarkable work ethic. She picked cotton, tended gardens, plowed fields, cared for livestock, and cultivated a lifelong love for dogs. She was also a standout basketball player for the Warren Mustangs. Despite her hard-working nature, May knew how to enjoy life. She and her girlfriends would tape their boyfriends' initials to their legs while working in the fields, creating makeshift "tattoos" that would still be visible when basketball season began.
May raised her three daughters—Sandra, Kim, and Christy—as a single mother. She worked tirelessly to provide for them, often holding multiple jobs to ensure they always had food on the table, a roof over their heads, and beautiful clothes to wear. Her daughters were the center of her world, and she never hesitated to put their needs ahead of her own.
She began her working career at Robert's Drive-In on West Broadway. She later co-managed Crain Grocery and Underwood's BBQ and worked as a waitress at the Bunker Hill Snack Bar. Eventually, she became a butcher in the meat departments of United, Safeway, and Homeland, for many years. Later in life, she worked for the Jackson County Health Department and the Western Oklahoma State College Nursing Department. At the time, her daughters did not fully realize the sacrifices their mother made for them, but those sacrifices became increasingly evident as the years passed.
The determination and resourcefulness May learned as a child remained with her throughout her life. Whether she was gardening, canning, texturing walls, painting, sewing, or finding creative ways to stretch a dollar, she was determined that her family would never go without. She possessed a servant's heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend, neighbor, or stranger in need. Her kindness came naturally, and her generosity knew no bounds.
In her later years, May found lasting companionship and true love with Charles "Charlie" Gipson. Together, they shared a deep bond built on lifelong friendship, laughter, faith, and the love of music. They enjoyed making memories with family, spending time together, and appreciating life's simple blessings. Charlie brought great joy to May's life, and she cherished every moment they shared.
May was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie; her parents, John and Lena Bitz; and her brothers, Ray and Carl Bitz.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and selflessness through her daughters, Sandra Walck and husband, Brent, Kim Rumschlag and husband, Gerry, and Christy Duffy and husband, Mike; her grandchildren, Savannah Pyle and husband, Luke, Kristin Nichols, Sydnee Groff and husband, Kaelan, Brock Walck and wife, Addie, and Allie Walck; and her great-grandchildren, Oliver Pyle, Lula, Levi and Lake Groff, and Shepherd Walck; along with many cherished extended family members and dear friends.
May will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering strength, and selfless heart. She lived a life defined not by what she possessed, but by what she gave to others. Through her example, she taught those around her the values of hard work, kindness, resilience, faith, and unconditional love. Her legacy will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 6:30 PM. on Friday, June 12th, at Kincannon Funeral Home. Immediately following will be a farewell prayer service.
Memorial donations can be made in May’s memory to Byars Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 25, Byars, Oklahoma 74831. Online memorial tributes and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.kincannonfuneralhome.com.
