Melvin Charles Bennett, Jr. was born on September 2, 1951, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Melvin Charles and Shirley Louise (Moss) Bennett. Shortly after his birth, the family transferred to Tinker Air Force Base, where his younger brother, Mike, was born. His mother later married Herb Brannan, and the family relocated to Altus, Oklahoma, where Melvin attended school.
Following high school, Melvin proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country before later transitioning to the Army National Guard. Throughout his military career, he faithfully served his beloved country for more than 21 years.
Melvin had a lifelong love for anything on wheels. From drag racing and four-wheeling to riding his motorcycle, he embraced the thrill of the ride. One of his favorite traditions was traveling to Sturgis to attend the annual motorcycle rally. In addition to his passion for motorsports, Melvin also enjoyed hunting and bowling and spending time with friends who shared those interests.
Melvin passed from this life the morning of Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at his home in Altus. His father, Melvin; step-father, Herb Brannan; and daughter-in-law, Cassandra Bennett preceded him in death. Those left to honor Melvin’s memory are his beloved mother, Shirley Brannan of the home; brother, Mike Bennett and wife, Lisa; sons, Jason Bennett and wife, Renee’, Josh Bennett and wife, Stephanie, and Jeremy Sadler and wife, Maria; twelve grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
The family will formally greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, March 15th. Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM on Monday, March 16th, in the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with military honors rendered by the Blue Knights Honor Guard. Burial will immediately follow at the Altus City Cemetery.
