Molly Cockrell Reid

November 5, 1935 — June 6, 2025

Princeton, Texas ~ Longtime Altus Resident

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Molly Reid on June 6, 2025. She was 89.

Born Molly Virginia Cockrell in Port Arthur, Texas, she moved with her family to Eagletown, Oklahoma, then moved again to Idabel. After graduating high school Molly briefly attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, then married her sweetheart Richard P. (Dick) Reid, and worked at Oklahoma State University for over 20 years. After moving to Altus in 1979, Molly became the Jackson County United Way Director in which she participated in and/or started many ongoing Altus Civic Programs to include the Short Grass Arts & Humanities Council, Harvest for the Hungry, and the Altus Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100 “Welcome Wagon” to welcome new Altus Air Force Base Airmen.

Molly became known as the “cookie lady” organizing and coordinating a dozen cookie makers for nearly two decades for both the Annual Altus Airmen Cookie Drop and the annual Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain receiving OSAI’s first “Volunteer of the Year” award in 2022. She was named the Altus Republican Women’s “Person of the Year,” and was awarded the prestigious Altus Air Force Base “Friend of Altus.”

Preceded in death by her soulmate of 47 years, Molly is survived by her sister, Ann; brothers, Ernest, Curtis, and Dan; her two sons, Mark and Jay; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Molly loved to play bridge, watch sports, and cook up an endless supply of goodies for her family and friends throughout the year, especially Christmas.

Her memorial is planned for 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the First Methodist Church of Altus ~317 N. Main Street~ with Pastor Jerry Rabb officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following services for a Life Reception. Join us for some laughs and raise a glass in celebration of Molly’s life and her joining loved ones in God’s embrace.
