Tom began his employment at Altus Air Force Base with the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) in 1954 shortly after graduating from Altus High School in 1953. He started his career as a service station attendant at AAFB. After working there a few months he joined the United States Army in March 1957 and served honorably until March 1959. After serving a two-year duty in the Army he returned to his old job as a Service Station Manager at AAFB. He was later promoted and served in various management jobs at Barksdale AFB, Shaw AFB, Fort Sheridan - Illinois, Columbia - S.C., Fort Stewart – GA, Lajes Field AFB in the Azores Island, San Franscisco – CA, Washington – D.C., and Frankfurt – Germany where he was General Manager of the Tri-Border Area Exchange. He retired from AAFES in July 1989 after 35 years of service.
After his retirement Tom and his wife, Sherry settled in Lake Kiowa, Texas, where they lived until January 2009 when they moved back to Altus. He loved playing golf, fishing, and restoring old classic cars.
Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Sherry; son, Tommy Lynn Harrod and wife, Pam (Altus); daughter, Candace Ann Harrod and wife, Liz (Las Vegas); sister, Mary Nightengale; along with many other family members and treasured friends who will forever hold Tom close in their hearts.
His parents, T.W. and Thelma Cleo Harrod; his brothers, Dean, Kenneth, and Jerry; and sister, Brenda Pruskowsky preceded him in death.
The family will formally greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8th at Kincannon Funeral Home. Graveside Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 9th, at Altus City Cemetery with Pastor Doug Altom officiating.
